Hum Apke Hai Kaun vs. Hum Saath Saath Hai

Drool @ Salman Khan !

If you haven’t watched these two Rajshri classics, then I assume you have been living under a rock. Every person I have come across has absolutely fallen in love with Hum Apke Hai Kaun (HAKHK) and Hum Saath Saath Hai (HSSH). I still have difficulty deciding (after watching both a million times) which one I like more. Rajshri Productions have a history of churning out family dramas which one can watch over and over again. With HAKHK, Rajshri generated the biggest commercial hit of 1994 (All Time Blockbuster). Madhuri Dixit was labeled as the first female superstar. Salman Khan turned into the ‘coveted’ romantic hero. On the other hand, HSSH didn’t create the same magic with its box office collections. However, it still remains a supreme favorite for many Bollywood buffs (like wistful old me).  At times when action films were considered more bankable than drama, these films re-wrote the unwritten rules of Indian Cinema. HAKHK also gave us one of the best onscreen jodis of all times: Salman and Madhuri. In Hum Saath Saath Hai, most of the actors from HAKHK were recast. These included Salman Khan (Yippy), Monish Behl, Alok Nath, Satish Shah, Ajit Vachani and Himani Shivpuri. Furthermore, it’s the message which these two films have that touches your heart. They both teach us how to keep our ghar ke rishteys intact.

How lucky Sonali is. I would love to be in her place :)
The director (and writer) of the films, Sooraj Barjatya is a master in giving the audience what they want to see. HAKHK proved to be a landmark in his career. His direction in both films was precise and flawless. Moreover, the costumes, plot and choreography laid foundations for films of this genre even today. These films created the trend of having wedding songs in films, fun games for families (pass the parcel from HAKHK anyone?) and increasing melodramatic moments in Hindi films.   The sets were gorgeous, music was fantastic and even if you are a stone, I guarantee you that you WILL cry.
Okay so if you haven’t seen the films yet (OMG), here’s a bit of their plots (Contains Spoilers):

Hum Aapke Hai Kaun

-From Wikipedia (Am too lazy to write their plots)
It tells the story of two lovers, Prem (Salman Khan) and Nisha (Madhuri Dixit) who are very fun loving, cheerful and full of mischief. Prem's elder brother, Rajesh (Mohnish Behl), is to be married to Nisha's elder sister, Pooja (Renuka Shahane). Prem and Nisha fall in love. Tragedy falls upon the two families as Pooja dies. Nisha's parents talks about a marriage between Rajesh and Nisha. Prem and Nisha agree to sacrifice their love for Rajesh and the baby. Thus, begins a rollercoaster of emotional moments.
Tuffy ! He was the only one cuter than Salman Khan in HAKHK.

Songs to look out for: Didi Tera Devar Deewana, Babul, Mayan May and Pehla Pehla Pyar Hai
Thumbs Up:
Salman Khan & Madhuri Dixit
The plot
The songs ( oooo so romantic)
Tuffy (the dog)
Thumbs down:
Too emotional for some people (like me) to digest as you end up sobbing hysterically
Pooja’s death

Hum Saath Saath Hai
Ram Kishen (Alok Nath) and Mamta’s (Reema Lagoo) family are the ‘sukh dukh bathney’ type family. They live for each other and apparently no one can ever break them apart (so they think). The elder son, Vivek (Mohish Behl) gets married to Sadhna (Tabu). Prem (obviously Salman Khan) and Vinod are engaged to Preeti (Sonali Bendre) and Sapna (Karisma Kapoor). All is well until an incident leads Mamta to drive Vivek and Sadhna out of the house. What happens afterwards? Buy a DVD now and find out for your self.

Maa ki Mamta (For now)
Thumbs Up:
Salman Khan (By now you would have realized my love for Salman)
Wedding songs
Its social message
Thumbs down:
Too many characters
We all know that in real life things don’t end up so rosy.
Songs to look out for: Yeh Toh Sach Hai Ke Bhagwan Hai, Maare Hivda Mein and Sunoji Dulhan Ik Baat Sunoji.

The Vamps ! Inspired by Bindu much ?!
