Sau Din Saas Ke

Asha watching the wicked witches gobbling up !

Starring: Reena Roy, Asha Parekh, Lalita Pawar, Raj Babbar
Directed by: Vijay Sadanah

First off, I just want to admit that am a big time buff of saas-bahu dramas. And if the saas is a wicked vamp, then – Oh Yaay ! All the more fun ! J Sau Din Saas Ke is one such film in which a daughter in law tolerates the atrocities of her mother in law. It exposes the phony social norms in Indian society (which unfortunately exists even today) which force us to ill treat newly formed relations.
Leech-y Lallaji with his caked up mistress

Sau Din Saas Ke questions the position of bahus in an Indian household. Bhavani Devi (Lalita Pawar) rules over her sons and is shrewdly manipulated by her daughter Shobha (Guddi Maruti) and son in law, Lalla Ji. The three of them torment Bhavani’s eldest daughter in law Sheela (Asha Parekh). Enter Durga (Reena Roy) who has married the younger son of the family, Prakash (Raj Babbar). Durga stands up to her mother in law and has an answer for her every ploy. Thus, begins a huge battle between the bahus and their saas. Buy a DVD of Sau Din Saas Ke now to discover who wins.
It's amazing how easily actresses could emote in those days.

The performances in this film are classic and notable. Clearly, the female artistes have more prominent roles in the film. Lalita Pawar is one actress whose name is synonymous to evil on -screen characters. In Sau Din Saas Ke, she leaves a profound impact as the dominating mother and saas of her children. Her wickedness seethes on screen making her character look extremely believable. Asha Parekh is her usual demure self. She plays her role effortlessly and allows real (grief stricken only!) bahus to relate to her situations.
Don't mess with Durga

Reena Roy is the star of the show. She plays an unconventional daughter in law who questions society’s norms of suppressing bahus. Reena Roy looks fierce as Durga and I have realized how outstanding she is as an actress. Also, one cannot help but notice Reena Roy’s striking resemblance to Sonakshi Sinha.
Aww ! Happier times. Of course its a dream sequence. Did you expect that to happen for real ? Yeah right.

Vijay Sadanah’s direction was flawless. His work stands out and smoothly addresses a conventional issue in a contemporary setting. The theme of this film depicts the reality of its presence in every home. As they say, Yeh Kahaani Har Ghar Ki Hai (Oh well almost every home).

So without another thought, go buy a DVD of this classic today and indulge in its realism.

Thumbs Up:
Story line
Reena Roy’s performance as Durga
Lalita Pawar
Strong women oriented perspectives
Thumbs Down:
Music is some-what terrible
Climax was not very impressive

Ratings: 8.5/10
