Andaaz (Akki-Pri Special)

Reminiscing Anarkali !

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta
Directed by: Raj Kanwar

There is nothing relatively novel about Andaaz. Why then do I still LOVE it?? Of course because I am fixated with romance. However, it is also because I love Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra. And this feature is especially for Akki-Pri fans.

Sau Din Saas Ke

Asha watching the wicked witches gobbling up !

Starring: Reena Roy, Asha Parekh, Lalita Pawar, Raj Babbar
Directed by: Vijay Sadanah

First off, I just want to admit that am a big time buff of saas-bahu dramas. And if the saas is a wicked vamp, then – Oh Yaay ! All the more fun ! J Sau Din Saas Ke is one such film in which a daughter in law tolerates the atrocities of her mother in law. It exposes the phony social norms in Indian society (which unfortunately exists even today) which force us to ill treat newly formed relations.

Hum Apke Hai Kaun vs. Hum Saath Saath Hai

Drool @ Salman Khan !

If you haven’t watched these two Rajshri classics, then I assume you have been living under a rock. Every person I have come across has absolutely fallen in love with Hum Apke Hai Kaun (HAKHK) and Hum Saath Saath Hai (HSSH). I still have difficulty deciding (after watching both a million times) which one I like more. Rajshri Productions have a history of churning out family dramas which one can watch over and over again. With HAKHK, Rajshri generated the biggest commercial hit of 1994 (All Time Blockbuster). Madhuri Dixit was labeled as the first female superstar. Salman Khan turned into the ‘coveted’ romantic hero. On the other hand, HSSH didn’t create the same magic with its box office collections. However, it still remains a supreme favorite for many Bollywood buffs (like wistful old me).  At times when action films were considered more bankable than drama, these films re-wrote the unwritten rules of Indian Cinema. HAKHK also gave us one of the best onscreen jodis of all times: Salman and Madhuri. In Hum Saath Saath Hai, most of the actors from HAKHK were recast. These included Salman Khan (Yippy), Monish Behl, Alok Nath, Satish Shah, Ajit Vachani and Himani Shivpuri. Furthermore, it’s the message which these two films have that touches your heart. They both teach us how to keep our ghar ke rishteys intact.

English Babu Desi Mam

Happy ending !

Starring: Shahrukh Khan, Sonali Bendre, Sunny Singh, Saeed Jaffery
Directed by: Praveen Nischol

‘English Babu Desi Mam’ has been labeled as somewhat of a less impressive part of Shahrukh Khan’s filmography. Nonetheless, I quite liked this film. Why? Mainly because it has King Khan. On a more serious note though, it has a plot which has become .. umm..rather extinct these days. Nowadays, a film garners publicity based on its love making scenes, bikini scenes or even six pack abs of heroes. It’s becoming difficult to watch films with your entire family. EBDM is a film which has drama, music and comedy – in abundance. Unfortunately (and surprisingly) this film didn’t earn commercial success.

Isssshtyleee?? Naa Just "Style"

Showin' some love !

Okay So I was quite young (Ah such good times) when this film was released. A couple of days ago I borrowed its DVD from a friend (which I have still kept, even though she keeps asking back for it) and watched the entire film. My overall impression of it ? – Mixed  ! (I did find some scenes hilarious, but the plot was a bit too puzzling for my liking) Though it is cringe worthy at times (which I will mention later), this film is a good time pass yaar. What puzzles me though is why is this film titled “Style”? There is nothing Isshtly-ish about it. The plot is primitive, the heroes are not the kind you would daydream about, the music is Meeeh ! Hmmm, I guess there are some things in life which we will never comprehend.
